About

This workshop is inspired by a document discovered in the personal papers of Wanda Rozynska. Entitled “The Ceremony,” the document describes a series of objects, costumes, gestures and forms meant to become “symbols for the renewal and healing of friends.” This ceremony and its hope for creative renewal resonates with us on a personal level, but also connects to societal shifts that have taken place since 2020. The document’s insistence on metamorphosis as a constant force in life, and its demonstration of care, support, and friendship through a period of trauma and healing gain new relevance within our contemporary experience.

Biographies of the instructors

Leisure (Meredith Carruthers and Susannah Wesley)

Leisure is a collaborative art practice between Montreal-based artists Meredith Carruthers and Susannah Wesley. Working together under the name “Leisure” since 2004, their approach extends their own conversation and collaboration to include their historical subjects, family members, and community participants. The resulting projects are multidisciplinary in format—from workshops, to published texts, interactive installations, and object-making involving a variety of media.

Marko Savard

Marko Savard's utilitarian pieces are produced on a potter's wheel, while his sculptural pieces are handbuilt. The artist navigates between these two worlds while searching for satisfaction and balance. His production is made up of small collections revisited from time to time, at times playful and colorful, at others more subdued and obscure. With the objects he makes, he offers a very personal vision of ceramics that bears his signature.

The instructors would like to thank the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec and the Canada Council for the Arts for their financial support.
